about

With the notable exception of Carlos Santana, México is not well known for producing musical talent, especially great guitarists, but Pablo de León (from México city) knows his way around a fretboard and also is no slouch when it comes to vocal delivery either. This eleven-track debut exposes his love for Rock and Blues.
The Honky-Tonk piano and driving rhythm of “THC Blues”starts the album in an upbeat mood and gives the first taste of de León’s soloing expertise. The slower-paced, heavier “Karma” brings de León’s gritty vocal tone to the fore which makes this track sound “oh so good”. “World Comes Crumbling Down”has that whiskey-fuelled jam session flavour present in spades on a Quireboys album, so it’s clear that this guy knows a trick or two! “Lucifer’s Road” pulls in acoustic and slide guitar combined with a mid-song tempo change to keep things fresh and conjures up images of cowboys, heat and temptation. A cleaner, sweet riff reminiscent of early Eric Clapton kicks in with “Standin’ in a Crossfire” and brings with it a heavenly solo break.
De León and his band have that rare ability to make a new song sound familiar, partly thanks to a tightly locked-together outfit, whilst having the freedom to express their individuality during intros and soloing.
Going back to basics, the walking bassline of “Give a Little Bit Of Lovin’” is overlaid by more piano passages and beatiful guitar phrasings which make this stripped-back track a winner.
This is then followed by an instrumental interlude by way of “Shambala” before “Stranger” takes over with it’s Rolling Stones playing country sound which may sound dire but it’s actually brilliant.
“Wanderers and Vagabonds” is the closest thing to a ballad that can be found here. It starts slow and gentle but builds into a powerful, guitar-soaked outing. Unfortunately
de León’s vocal peaks too near the end of the track, but this is a mere’ detail. Blues rocker “Trainwreck” completes the package and ensures they finish in style.
Pablo de León must have blues licks dripping from his hands as he and his band have laid down some fine pieces here. There’s more of a midwest than mexican feeling with shades of Bon Jovi, Guns n’ Roses and Stevie Ray Vaughan throughout. This won’t be the last time we hear from these guys!
